You’re probably already too old.
Ok you’re never TOO old for Botox, but the earlier you get it, the better it is at preventing those fine lines and wrinkles from ever showing up. All those late night benders in your twenties will eventually catch up – if they haven’t already merged with all those late nights of no sleep with a baby. Don’t believe me? There’s tons of research and news on it.
I am just here to tell you, you should schedule that first appointment today if you haven’t already. Yes, it’s a personal preference but being a busy mom – I just don’t have the time, patience or money to spend on all the miracle creams out there, and prefer a rather instantaneous effect.
Disclaimer – I’ve been getting Botox injections for almost two years now (that means I started when I was 34, or about 5 years later than I probably should have). So, as a regular who has been a number of different doctors for injections, here are my 5 must-know about injections:
- No, you won’t look fake and plastic. Unless you want to. If you go to a real doctor who does these regularly like Dr. Zuckerman on Madison Avenue instead of some shady guy in his home with a box full of hypodermic needles, you’re going to walk out looking amazing. I even have friends who husbands DO NO KNOW they get Botox – that’s how natural it looks.
- It takes about 48 hours to notice it. As I mentioned, I just don’t have time for miracle creams to relieve my aging face. I don’t want to wait 2-4 months to see “a huge change.” Maybe it’s the New Yorker in me, but I want to look good for that event on Saturday night. Botox is NOT immediate – you will leave the doctors office with a couple red spots on your face, but no fewer wrinkles. You will wake up a couple days later and notice – no crows feet – but it take a full seven days to take on the full effect. Learn more about all that here.
- It doesn’t hurt, but there is a little crunch. How does it feel to get a needle in your face? Just like a tiny needle in your face would feel like. It doesn’t really hurt – but there is some pressure, and sometimes one of the injections can be a little uncomfortable, but the good part – you’re outta there in about 5 minutes. And would ladies be going back religiously if it hurt?
- Is it expensive? It depends – let’s be honest. It’s going to cost you a little more to see a top doctor in Manhattan more than it is seeing just a certified injector in Des Moines, Iowa. It also depends on what you inject and how much of it you need (hence, prevention ladies!). Botox is the most expensive, but there are other options like Dysport and Restaylne that basically do the same, for a little bit less per CC. So if you’re crows and brows aren’t beyond repair, it should run you between $250-$600 per session.
- How long does it last? I usually go back every four months, but they say it wears off anywhere between 3-4 months. I usually go 3 times per year. March (for summer prep!), July and November (just in time for holiday photos). But you can go as often as you want – sometimes you’ll see you need a touch-up sooner or later and I usually just go once I look at myself and say WOOF! I think it’s time for a touch-up.
