One of my favorite things to do as a kid was go to the bookstore with my grandma. Once a week we would head into town to Amy’s Books, a consignment shop of wonder. As a small child, I could spend HOURS in there – just browsing the covers. I can still remember the musty smell from all the old, used books, but it was like a wild adventure to me.
Gram was always into her romance novels. She could read 2-3 in a week! Or more! She actually had a notebook of what titles she had read already, and which one she hadn’t so she was sure not to miss any in the series. That is what you call an avid reader! No wonder I still carry this obsession with books till this day.
If you’re ever in our house, you’ll see my stacks of books upon books. Even though I work, live and breath technology, I just can’t give up the tangible feeling of reading real books. There is just something about holding it, and paging through the story.
So when The Moms invited me to meet Wendy Williams to hear about her new book, I just had to go. I was intrigued to hear about this the new-age romance novel, and follow in the footsteps of my gram. It was also sponsored by Burlington, so we also were offered gift cards to head out and get new #BurlingtonOOTD to show off at the event. Ooooo lala.
Remember ladies – it’s OKAY to take some you time. Get a great new outfit without spending a fortune, hit the town, then come home and curl up with a new book.
Let me just tell you. I.LOVE.WENDY.WILLIAMS.
She is about as real, honest and raw as they get. She is someone other women and moms can really relate to because she talks about real issues that we deal with day to day. Like the sweaty line. haha. You know what I am talking about.
She said, no one can ever really give you advice, because no one knows you.
That really resonated with me because it’s true. In this day and age, everyone thinks they know what is best for them, for you AND for the world. If that was true, we wouldn’t be at war or have starving children. So it’s important to remember to stay grounded and be yourself. Sure, it’s fun to read my blog posts and see my opinions and recommendations, but you are still the final judge and jury for your own decisions.
So anyways, Wendy’s new book, Hold Me In Contempt is AMAZING! I literally can’t put it down. It’s set right here in NYC, so I can follow the main character as she’s off to brunch with her brother in Chelsea, visiting her cousin in Brooklyn, and cuddling up on her couch in TriBecA.
If you read my article on MommyNearest.com this week about Taking Downtime for Yourself, you’ll understand that reading has also become a component of that. Instead of always being on my phone checking Twitter and Instagram, I take Wendy to bed instead. haha. Seriously, it really helps you unwind from the day and disconnect.
I love the book so much it’s also accompanied me on my morning commutes on the subway!
I haven’t finished it yet, but it won’t be long! You should go grab yourself a copy and see how nice the old art of reading books can be. You owe it to yourself to take some ME time – Wendy agrees! (you can order her book here!)
