I thought biting was only for babies. But then, the savage child I am raising bit off the top of my brand new water bottle in a matter of minutes. Then there was the headphone cord, my phone charger… and well, someone was going down as burnt crisp. And it wasn’t our breakfast toast.
So I found it humorous to read him this book, We Don’t Eat Our Classmates by Ryan T. Higgins, the author of the popular Mother Bruce series. It follows Penelope Rex on her first day of school who has an appetite for more than learning!
It was funny and fun to read with school starting just around the corner, and why we don’t want to eat our classmates, or their, um… shoe strings?
So while we don’t eat our classmates, we DO in fact still think dinosaurs are delicious….and we eat them in many different ways (but all of which are 100% bite-approved.
If you’re having butterflies for the first day of school, or have a little biter, send them off for a great first day with something delicious (besides their classmates). Here’s a trick that’s fun, easy and – delicious!
DINO BITES
Appropriately named, this is one of our favorite lunches to make together. Crescent rolls are simple and quick to roll out, and they bake while you’re getting ready to run out the door.
Ingredients:
- 1 can crescent rolls
- package of hot dogs
- dinosaur cookie cutter (or your favorite animal!)
- ketchup, mustard or BBQ sauce (Penelope’s favorite)
Directions:
- Spread out all of the crescent rolls on a sheet pan and press together to make one large dough. Bake for about 7-10 minutes at 350 degrees – do not over bake!
- I usually add a couple hot dogs to the pan on the side at the same time to cook in a hurry in the mornings.
- Take them out and let them cool a couple minutes. I usually am prepping the rest while this happens.
- Use your dino cookie cutters to make crescent roll “buns”.
- Slice the hot dogs in half so they lay properly and voila – DINO BITES.
