Allergies are something new I’ve discovered. It started about two years ago when all of a sudden I was having a hard time running and breathing. I felt I was in good shape, so I didn’t understand why I was having such hard breathing issues.
Then my eyes started bothering me and my ears, too.
It was then I realized I was developing spring allergies. I am not really sure what’s to blame – age, the environment (city living)…. but something was really taking a toll on me once the ground started to thaw.
I tell this story because like myself, I bet there are lots of other allergy sufferers out there who don’t REALIZE it’s allergies.
Luckily, once the summer comes and most of the pollen (self-diagnosed culprit) has blown away, I start to feel better. But these few months in between can be hindering, especially if you’re training for a spring half or full marathon.
How I “run” through spring allergies
- It seems sad because it’s finally beautiful out, but I try to limit my time outdoors. And if I do run outside – I avoid parks. Running under cherry blossoms and budding trees gives headaches as much as causes my breaths to stay shallow.
- Hot yoga. I love hot yoga because it helps me find my breath, which allows me to work on deeper inhales. It also helps me sweat out any pollen that might be trapped in or on my skin.
- Similasan. These natural homeopathy allergy relief lines have been keeping me sane all spring. They have eye drops, earache relief, and nose spray. Without these, I wouldn’t be able to sleep at night or get through the day.
Similasan originated in Switzerland in the 1980s (same age as me!), and their natural remedies are the only products that bring me relief. They offer items for the ears, eyes, nose, head and chest. Trust me, if you are still in denial that you have allergies, try one of these European bad boys and tell me you don’t notice a difference. Plus, it’s all-natural so you don’t have to complain that you don’t like to take medicine. Neither do I.
