January is a cold and bitter month to most, but those who grew up in the Northeast love it. We live for the cold mornings and icy commutes because we know that we get to come home to hot and satisfying eats and football games. January was meant for playoff season and that means quality family time with an impressive snack spread. You didn’t walk into a home without football on the screens and munchies you could easily scoop into your mouth with your hand.
Times haven’t changed much in that department here. While the Steel Curtain might not be on the screen (or any black and gold for that matter) this month, we still love to cozy up and spend snowy Sundays watching the teams duke it out for the title on cold fields from the comforts of our couch (how about that Pats/Kansas City game amirite?). While the players get bold on the field, we join in with bold and crunchy options from the couch.
Now referred to as “homegating” this practice has evolved into a tradition that once started in many Yinzer homes far before I was even born.
I still love the look of a fun spread that is within reach on the coffee table that you can pick at all day long. Kitchens are overrated on Sundays during football season, we prefer simple items that can be enjoyed over bad calls and penalties.
So what do you like on your spread? Simplicity.
Chips and dip and beers. And something warm.
Popchips have become a new football staple in our home because we still get to munch and it’s a better snack option (and most varieties are non-GMO!). They’re gluten-free as well and don’t contain any artificial ingredients. That means you can get to enjoy your “cheat” day without the guilt!
Plus, they DO have vegan options for us looking to skip the cheese (looking at you tangy barbecue for the win!).
Just in time for playoffs, popchips has bolder ridges that create a thicker chip full of move flavor. Which is why I don’t mind shamelessly plugging them as my go-to with winter chili. We always keep popchips on-hand as a dipping/scooping option.
Another yinzer specialty is adding chips (and fries!) to our foods. We love French fries on salads, but we also love crunched up chips on top of (veggie!) hot dogs and to dip into (vegan!) chili. Popchips are the perfect chip for this because they’re sturdy and won’t crumble or break (which honestly is a big seller on dipping in this household!).
Max’s Favorite: Cheddar and Sour Cream – always a big fan with kids (and grown-up kids, too!)
Mom’s Favorite: Tangy Barbeque with chili. These are sweet and smoky with a touch of spices that make them a perfect complement to scoop up chili. Plus it gives you that crunch factor that would win on Top Chef.
Yinzer Favorite: Buffalo Ranch. This has Pittsburgh written all over it. It’s like buffalo chicken dip in a bag. Not only is it less messy, it has less fat and calories than those chicken wings (and more portable) to satisfy your craving.
Where can you pick these new flavors up?
Basically any grocery store (and if not – Amazon!).
