I had a conversation last week about why I don’t like pizza. People usually gasp when I admit this because – how American can you be not to like pizza, right? But just as I have learned culturally, my friends grew up with certain foods and items, one thing we didn’t eat on the farm was – pizza. We were mostly self-sustained out there (shocking right) with a bi-monthly trip to the grocery store for necessities like sugar for baking, tobacco (for my grandpa’s pipe) and crisco. My gram LOVED crisco.
We ate locally and seasonally, but that also meant foods on the farm. We didn’t eat a lot of broccoli, but alway had corn, we didn’t eat oranges but always had apples. I imagine that pomegranates never made it to western PA grocery stores back in the 80s because (1) they cost too much to ship there but (2) because who was cutting these open to make pomegranate pie? I can just see my gram cursing under her breath trying to open these tricky little fruits.
But now as city dwellers, fall seasonal foods mean something entirely different – it means there is a surge in these items availability and you can get them for a smaller cost due to abundance. Just like blueberry season, I love this time of year for these sweet and crunchy seeds to overhaul our pantry. While pie may seem the obviously route with pomegranate, fruit pie isn’t the only thing they’re good for. Here are two of my favorite, and rather simple, pomegranate recipes to convince you to try these delicious fruits in your everyday recipes.
Pomegranate Guacamole
Another ingredient we didn’t have much on the farm (and I couldn’t imagine not having now!) was avocados. Mixing these two together will bring life to your simple little party appetizer.

POM Refresh
The bartender in me loves this one. Muddling doesn’t have to happen in dark speakeasys – grab some fresh mint, salt and make s simple, classic and yet fancy “mocktail” at home.

POM POM Tips
Every wonder how the heck you cut a pomegranate? It’s just like an onion – there is a RIGHT WAY to avoid the pain and torture – you can find that here.
