Before you do a double take and say….. GO GREEN? Coming from the girl who used to own a Hummer? Yes, even past Hummer-owners can be green!
Even in NYC?
Yes! Especially in NYC! Think about it – we’re already one step ahead by taking the subway every day instead of driving, and the fact that our landlords make us recycle or get fined? That’s just LOVE they’re really showing for Mother Earth! How about all that recycled food the bums are eating! Thought your Starbucks latte was too sweet? They don’t! Ok ok. So you don’t have bums in your backyard like me and you commute to work. So now what?
Earth Day New York at Union Square
Well there’s actually an awesome event going on all day today in Union Square that can teach kids AND adults about recycling, composting, and yes going full-hippie. Trust me, recycling your under things and going braless is not only going green, you’re going hipster! You can even bring in your old clothes, textiles and electronics to recycle, and even get green product samples. Learn more about it here! I also thought this cute post by fellow mom blogger Rebecca at The Mommy Sauce was great for kids! She says use the Lorax – of course! Not quite ready to go full monty on green today? Try these Stephanie approved baby steps:
Have You Ever Thought About Glass Straws?
Plastic is so 1999 with their slap bracelets. Glass is in. Stop buying all those cheap plastic straws at Target. Who’s reusing them? GROSS. Can you say sticky food and mold? No thanks! GlassDharma makes it really easy for you to be green with these amazing glass straws in multiple shapes and sizes. They even have a tiny brush for cleaning them. They’re actually also easy to travel with, and we carry one in the diaper bag so we can use our own straws instead of causing garbage when we eat out at restaurants. I feel so eco-savvy! Plus, Maximo likes that they’re see-through to watch the water go up and down. PLUS – they have a hassle-free guarantee against breakage! So if you do happen to drop it on the kitchen floor accidently, you can just email them for a new one!
Quit Using Chemicals
This was (sort of) a no brainer when I became a mom. I realized I had to swap out our shampoo, toothpaste, and our —- carpet cleaner? Yes! We even have to request “non toxic” exterminating spray when they come around to (GASP!) keep the cockroaches away. Ohhhh…. NYC! So when the Good Home Company asked me if I wanted to try their products – who wouldn’t? I love seeing what green cleaning items really work, smell good and are safe for us, Maximo and the environment. Let me tell you these products SMELL AMAZING!!! I am now hooked. Literally, I had (NO JOKE) 3 different neighbors stop by the day I was cleaning the apartment this week to see what smelled so incredible. We live like Seinfeld around here – so when they pop in like Kramer, you know something sparked their interest! My favorite is definitely Beach House with Pure Grass coming in a a close second. Ahhhh – I feel like I am back in Turks and Caicos with the windows open and curtains blowing…. **swoon**. The best part is that they are all natural – that means biodegradable (good for the planet), vegetable based (good for you!), and not tested on animals (good for Fido!) They also use essential oils in their products, which is why they smell so good. Essential oils are the shiiiiii!
Anways, since it’s Earth Day, GlassDharma, The Good Home Co. and myself thought we would treat you to a little “Go Green” giveaway to help you get on the right track. You too can try these awesome earth-friendly products by entering below!

I make my own household cleansers, especially anything that goes on the floor since my vet told me that dogs are getting more cancer due to the chemicals that we use. This guy’s been a vet for a loooong time, and he’s not the “rabid anti-Monsanto tree hugging” type either, so I don’t doubt him. #TBTlinkup
Stephanie says
I agree Stephanie – same with kids! I hate all the chemicals we use on the floors. No mas!

I always am interested in trying other green home-cleaning products. I have my faves, but it’s always good to try others, too. I’ve also gotten rid of many of our plastic plates and cups and filling up the cupboards with glass. I just need to find easy, on-the-go glass containers that won’t break!
Stephanie says
I’m with you on that – it is more work to clean, but we prefer the glass and ceramics too! I got an amazing cooking pan/lasagna pan I believe they call it from All Clad and it’s AMAZING. I’ve been using it for many different things!

By installing new solar panels to my outside garden to power various pumps/etc for my pond, and to start introducing more natural critters into my garden that are beneficially protective of veggies/flowers/plants from insects or bad critters that ruin it. That way, I don’t have to buy products to keep those nasty critters away anymore.

I’ve been using reusable water bottles for quite some time but still bought jugs of water to fill them. I recently invested in a water filter so I don’t buy water at all anymore.

No more water bottle I bought a filter for sink!
