Meeting celebrities is part of the job, and growing up as a bartender around famous athletes in Pittsburgh all the time made me immune to them early on in life. Now living in NYC, you can see Matt Damon walking down the street pushing a stroller with his wife (true story, it was one of my first encounters living in NYC).
But that doesn’t mean sometimes I get enamored by them – especially when they are as down to Earth as Kevin James. Honest moment – even though I live in Queens I really never WATCHED The King of Queens, I just don’t watch sitcoms at all – never had the time. But that all changed after I visited the set of Kevin Can Wait (at 8pm on Mondays – CBS).
First of all, he came rolling out in sweats and a baseball cap – like a true Long Island native. We talked about how bad the Jets are (sorry, Kev!), and how All-American Burger and Umberto’s are must-eats on the island. I could talk sports and food with this man all day. The point is, Kevin James is the real deal, and I don’t get to say that very often. He is just like his character in real life – quirky, quick with zingers, and well, quite possibly loves food even more than I do. I mean, they have an actual PIZZA SHOP built on the set.
Shot in-studio with a live audience right in Bethpage, you have to love that it’s bringing a fresh outlook to the area. New jobs, an incredible studio layout and crew (that rivals NYC and LA), and here’s why you’ll want to tune into Kevin Can Wait this Monday at 8pm on CBS:
– see how many Mets and Jets references you can pick out throughout their house – Kevin brought in a lot of his own love for the teams and you can see it displayed throughout the scenes (including real stadium seats from Shea Stadium!)
– maybe i am getting old, but there’s an authentic feel to the show about family life that you can laugh and relate to, unlike some shows that make unattainable NYC living look attainable
– this is an actual photo of Kevin when he played football. On the set. His love of sports is real you guys.
– Both Kevin and Erinn are parents themselves, and remind us that working and being with the kids is a daily struggle for us all (Erinn’s family actually LIVES in California, and she flies in to tape the show!). Being a parent is hard – no matter who you are – and I love that they let us live these “real” moments and finding humor in them on the show.
Here’s a quick clip for Monday’s Halloween episode to get you excited. If you’re watching live with me on Monday, tweet at me with the #kevincanwait hashtag. Love ya, Kev!
