It’s sort of strange when your kids start to read. They start reciting your text messages out-loud and reading the STD ads on the subway to everyone during rush hour.
But it’s also fun to finally embrace when your child graduates from level one reading into real books and novels, and you see them start to dive into books with the love that you have for reading yourself.
You’ll know when they start asking to bring a book along on car rides and airplanes instead of their electronic devices.
This happened to my son with Diary of an Awesome Friendly Kid: Rowley Jefferson’s Journal by Jeff Kinney.
Something about the mix of drawings and text in a day by day layout really intrigued him. So much so, that he asked me to get him his OWN journal – and has be documenting our daily activities (which are actually kind of cool to read and look back on. Well, except that journal piece where he said I spend too much time in the bathroom.).
Anyways, being almost 7, it’s not an easy read for him but he’s found so much joy in attempting it, that it’s become a great tool to travel with and help take him to the next level. Plus, I have to admit as a parent, it’s pretty funny and clever. And Max claims his own fame of being a Awesome Friendly Kid, which, I mean, he really is – going on NYC mayor.
So what exactly is Diary of an Awesome Friendly Kid: Rowley Jefferson’s Journal?
Yes, you’re right – it IS a spinoff of the massively popular and bestselling Diary of a Wimpy Kid series. And the story is told by the beloved character, Rowley Jefferson, from the Wimpy Kid world. What makes is so cool is Rowley exhibits the characteristics of an awesome, friendly kid through his positive outlook, enthusiasm, and kindness. So it’s a great character development book as well as a super fun read.
Not to mention, it’s sparked my son’s interest to take on the other series as well… and continue into this love of reading.
Swoon.
BONUS ANNOUNCEMENT – Greg Heffley, the titular hero of the Wimpy Kid series, returns in Diary of a Wimpy Kid #14, out later this year!
Where can you get the book and learn more? All things Wimpy Kid
Introducing the newest Wimpy Kid author—Rowley Jefferson! Rowley’s best friend Greg Heffley has been chronicling his middle-school years in thirteen Diary of a Wimpy Kid journals . . . and counting. But it’s finally time for readers to hear directly from Rowley in a journal of his own. In Diary of an Awesome Friendly Kid, Rowley writes about his experiences and agrees to play the role of biographer for Greg along the way. (After all, one day Greg will be rich and famous, and everyone will want to know his life’s story.) But Rowley is a poor choice for the job, and his “biography” of Greg is a hilarious mess.
