A wise woman once told me that you have to decide what is more important in your life – money or time.
It’s a hard question because clearly when you don’t have a lot of money, it’s more important – but then, time. Time is ALWAYS important because we only get a set amount of it allocated to us.
Hmm. While you chew on that philosophy lesson for the day, let me tell you why this question even came up.
It was when I was exhausted one day and just didn’t have the time or energy to go home and clean my house. When you have kids, it’s an ongoing battle, but scrubbing toilets and dishes just wasn’t going to be in the cards for me. She asked why I didn’t have a housekeeper. A what? To me, someone who grew up on a farm, those words were just not in my vocabulary. My gram would be turning in her grave. If would never pay for something you could manage on your own.
But then this wise women also told me – time is a limited quantity. Time with my son, time with myself. And delegating out simple chores to someone else who can do these for you to allow yourself the sanity and time to do things you SHOULD are important.
Letting someone into your private home can be daunting. I kept thinking about Miranda in SITC and how Magda replaced her sex toys with Virgin Mary statues. Was I going to come home to find Maxs’ iPad replaced with books and rulers? Would they judge me as a parent for even hiring someone to clean up after him for me?
So I did some research and starting looking up companies in NYC. Here’s what I found:
Find a reliable company: Fairy.
Google is your bestie, so is your social network. Get out there and check reviews and see who’s really going to do a good job, who will show up on time and won’t charge you $200 to leave toddler chocolate fingerprints on your windows.
Figure out how often you need to clean.
Sometimes you just need twice a month. Sometimes you need Every. Single. Day. Before you think you would never need someone every single day… imagine someone coming for just 30 min everyday to sweep, make your bed and do the dishes. Uh huh – no more doing all that at 11pm at night anymore when you’re exhausted. Fairy can do that and is one of the only cleaning companies I’ve found in NYC that will come DAILY.
What’s your budget.
Figure out what you need most in your life – and then what you can afford – someone to make your bed everyday? Someone to scrub your toilets once a week or someone to just come in and do major effin surgery on your fridge. Whatever it is you need, Fairy has you covered.
You don’t have to be home
Fairy is a trusted company, who background checks their cleaners and can be trusted to come into your home when you are not there. That means you also don’t have to plan to sit there and binge watch while they clean. You can leave your key with your doorman. Don’t have one? They’ll even give you a coded lockbox to use to keep your keys readily accessible!
