The other day I had a conversation with a fellow NYC mom about how there isn’t a lot of talk about the chemicals in the clothing we buy, but everything we put on is made and soaked in really bad stuff. Do you even wash it before you throw it on yourself or your child for the first time? And think about those of us who workout – we’re sweating out the bad stuff only to soak in others. Being a journalist, I did some work and saw even the Washington Post had something to say. That means we should take it more seriously.
As parents, I’d like to say we’re more aware of the things going into our foods, but are we paying attention to a lot of the other everyday items we’re using? I’ve decided to start eliminating chemicals one by one, and will document these on my blog so you can, too. Today we’re starting with something we use every single day and don’t think about them hosting chemicals – baby wipes. Who thinks there would be bad stuff in anything we would put next to our most precious things in the world? But there is. That’s why I’ve made the switch to WaterWipes, a premium European brand chemical-free baby wipe that contains only two ingredients, 99.9% purified water and 0.1% grapefruit seed extract.
Why WaterWipes
These baby wipes are pretty much the most natural item you can get – they contain NO HARMFUL CHEMICALS.
How does this work? They’re using water and grapefruit seed extract (aka – essential oils!) which are natural and not manmade. But do they work? Yes, they are still durable and effective just like any other wipe (in fact, having issues with diaper rash? Try switching to WaterWipes!). Since WaterWipes are chemical-free, they don’t contain preservatives. Unlike some other wipe brands, WaterWipes are not inter-folded. This allows for the sterile environment within the package to be maintained. For the same reason, they recommend that you do not relocate the wipes in an alternate container.
NOTE: The package will keep for up to 15 months before it is opened. Once you open your WaterWipes package, it is recommended that you use the pack within one month.
Where to Purchase
So where does one pick up something that’s made across the pond? A lot more places that you would think, including multiple locations at Stop and Shops right here in NYC – wait, even better – Queens! That’s right, Queens actually has healthy, natural items! Don’t tell everyone at once.
On our way to pick pumpkins on the farm this weekend, we stopped by our local shop on Northern Blvd. to run in and grab some wipes (we all know you need some wipes in the country!). They were easily accessible right in the baby items aisle. The best part? These wipes are great not only for us, but for the environment AND the animals we were visiting. So switching to natural products is good for everyone!

Love the chemical free option as we use a lot of wipes for the hands and face!
