We love museums. We’re surrounded by some of the best here in NYC and we try to pop in as much as possible. Especially since Max is old enough to remember and say, “remember that time we went to The Met and saw the naked statues?”
Growing up on a farm, we didn’t get a lot of culture, so I myself am fascinated to be able to take a train a couple of stops and see Monet inches in front of me. I think it also excites Max since he’s been more into visiting with me these days. In fact, he didn’t want to leave the Whitney the other day when he was able to lay there and try and recreate his own Warhol.
The Met has even taken it to another level.
They just partnered with State Bags to bring one-of-a-kind art to back to school. If you haven’t met William yet, let me introduce him here.
It’s pretty cool to walk around such an incredible museum and then turn around and wear that art on your back. It makes the experience now tangible and something they can remember every time they take out a pencil to do their homework. PS – the artfolio is also a must-have. This traveling drawing book that allows them to recreate the masterpieces while in front of Monet, Warhol, or just trying the cow they passed while driving to Vermont.
The Met x State collection features six pieces in two whimsical designs—the “Hippoflage” backpack, lunch box and artfolio featuring “William,” The Met’s celebrated ancient Egyptian hippopotamus figure—and unofficial mascot—in a fanciful, blue and gray collage of hippos tumbling and colliding to form a camouflage pattern; and the “Free the Unicorn” backpack, lunch box and artfolio featuring a wink to “The Unicorn in Captivity” (one of the most famous tapestries on display at The Met Cloisters) in a lively scene that shows the magical unicorn roaming free through fields of colorful flowers.
These are available today (July 29!) online just in time for school. Shop here.

The Met x State “Hippoflage” and “Free the Unicorn” Rodgers Lunch Boxes, $42
The Met x State “Hippoflage” and “Free the Unicorn” Harbor Artfolios, $35
The best part is, a portion of the proceeds will benefit The Met and State’s collective mission to support American children and families in need in the ways they need it most. The Met and State kicked off the giving back with a bag drop of this new collection to kids from Roads to Success, which promotes academic, personal and professional development through out-of-school-time programs.
