150 years ago it was 1866. That’s when William A. Breyer hand-cranked his first gallon of ice cream with fresh cream and pure cane sugar (and now Breyers Ice Cream is the maker of Americas No. 1 Vanilla ice cream!). I just want to take a minute to thank this man – and for thinking that churning cream and sugar and then freezing it sounded like a delicious idea.
First of all, I always say “everything in moderation.” If you deprive yourself of the simple pleasures in life, you’re going to really go off the wagon (just like a barrel of ice cream in the 1800s). Plus, as a dairy farmer – I have to take great pride in the fact that dairy IS making a comeback. Especially simple dairy, like Breyers (shameless plug!). Just don’t tell that to Maximo, fellow ice cream addict.
Anyways, like any 150th celebration, Breyers Ice Cream had a massive blow out in Madison Square Park last week and dropped a new ice cream flavor on us – Ice Cream Cake. Take a minute to let that sink in. Remember all those delicious summer birthday cakes you requested as a kid with the crunchies in the middle (oh, that was just me?)? Breyers recreated this for you – think Breyers Chocolate Ice Cream and loads of chocolatey crunchies, sandwiched between Breyers Natural Vanilla Ice Cream. Pretty much tasting it right now just reading this? My job is done!
So if you didn’t have a chance to come and binge on this new delicious ice cream flavor in the middle of New York City with us – do not fear! Now it comes in a cute little Breyers Ice Cream container at your local grocer. Yes, even in Queens. Afraid it won’t taste like and throw you back into an 80s time warp of your own backyard childhood birthday parties? We have you covered here as well. The kids (and, ahem, big kids) dove right into the creamy frozen treats and the verdict is in – kid-approved (even if you’re just a kid at heart!).
So, just wanted to let you know my little public service announcement to kick-off summer:
(1) Get out there and enjoy the weather with the family – that includes classic American summer nights filled with laughter and ice cream outside – make your own “party in the park”!
(2) Take pride in knowing that Breyers uses simple ingredients including All American dairy (Breyers only uses milk and cream from cows not treated with artificial growth hormones*), and the vanilla that goes into Breyers products is 100% Rainforest Alliance Certified, and comes from sustainable vanilla farms in Madagascar. Very cool.
(3) I said moderation! That doesn’t mean eat the entire container in one sitting. 🙂
*Suppliers of other ingredients such as cookies, candies and; sauces may not be able to make this pledge. The FDA states that no significant difference has been shown between dairy derived from rBST-treated and non-rBST treated.
