It’s raining today.
So what you ask? Well, in NYC it honestly NEVER rains. Take that from living in Pittsburgh where we had more overcast days than Seattle. No, true story. I like it rainy. So when it rains, it becomes an immediate vaca day if possible. Like today. I took Max to school and decided to skip the spin class and a lunch with a friend (sorry, Allison!) and work from home catching up with the windows open and a downpour outside.
Judge if you will, but as moms here in the US – we’re really good at taking care of others, and not of ourself. We deserve rainy days!
1. Bed Sheets
I won’t apologize when I say I decided to work from home to spend more time with my son. I worked hard to be where I am, so if once a month it rains in this city emitting dog urine odors to rise, I will hell or high water curl up in my cozy sheets and blankets and pillows. Recently I upgraded to these fun BedFace sheets, who refers to themselves as “the best damn sheets on the internet.” We have to agree, it’s hard to pry yourself out of these ones. See why I love them here.
2. Breakfast in #Bedface
You’re not going to get much done without some energy if you’re just laying there. So today is all about you – carbs don’t count. Breakfast should be something simple, and I don’t mean eating the leftover pieces of cold pancake your preschool left before rushing out the door. If you didn’t see my overnight oats recipe, nows the time to enjoy. AND, If you didn’t check the weather report last night just in case you might get a rainy day off, it’s okay – overnight oats are still REALLY GOOD in about 20 minutes. Here’s my secret: make your cup o’ joe and throw some overnight oats in the fridge, enjoy your coffee and check your emails – and then take a quick break to catch up on the news on Today! and have your mid-morning snack, maybe even meditate for 10 minutes – get bold, and then jump back in. Trust me – bedsheets, breakfast in #bedface, meditation and rain – this is be one of your most productive days ever.
3. Sweatpants
If I was running for President, I would say everyone gets to work from home on rainy days in sweat pants. Seriously – it would be productive. I get more done when I just roll over and grab my laptop on to my lap and start writing and answering emails. That commute into the office is going to be a soggy and delayed one anyways AND an expensive one if you’re trying to catch and Uber on their surge. I say video conference calls for everyone! PS – yes these are #NFLFANSTYLE Steeler Sweatpants – do you not think that 98% of any Pittsburgh-turned-New Yorker’s wardrobe happens to be black (and gold!?) haha.
4. Hallmark Christmas!
It is NEVER too early for cheesy, sappy romantic holiday flicks. And nothing makes better background noise.
5. Naps.
Really, I think I am living in the wrong country. Did you know in Europe they have (1) afternoon tea (2) work coincides with SCHOOL so parents can pick up kids every day, and (3) they encourage naps. Really there is research on it! They say you need 7-8 hours of sleep per day. So, if you only get a few hours at night – no wonder you’re tired during the day. Who says you can’t make up an hour on your lunch break? Today I’ll be taking a snooze lunch – hey if people can take a “liquid lunch” why can’t I do something that’s actually GOOD for me?
