We’re overly excited for the Big Game this year. I know the black and gold isn’t in it, but guess who else isn’t? That’s right – that evil team from the north (don’t need to name names here, we know). That means, we celebrate. I don’t know if you had a chance to watch some of the playoff games this year, but these two teams are worthy of the title – they have been fun to watch and both their defense and offensive lines are pretty stellar.
Plus, we get an excuse to eat- but it’s only a week away now so it’s time to start prepping. I have a few yinzer ideas coming down the pipeline, but also, here are a few staples you want to have handy to snack on for game time.
1. Restaurant Style Tortilla Chips and Thick and Chunky Medium Salsa from Late July
Chips and salsa are just a must. Plus, I just love tortilla chips and salsa cause it’s #vegan, and also organic and delicious when it’s Late July. Not to brag but they’re also non-gmo, gluten-free and kosher. Their touch of lime chips (my favorite!) are hard to put down. That’s why I usually eat these in a closest or when the kids are away with a friend – like Geanine. Sometimes moms deserve all the chips. And salsa.

2. 4C Breadcrumbs & Parmesan Cheese
Growing up, we always had 4C Breadcrumbs in the pantry. Whether it was breading chicken legs, tuna casserole or baked mac and cheese, the options are endless for throwing a little flavor/crunch on dinner to make it tastier. One of my fun and to-go recipes is spaghetti squash “parm.” Cut the squash in half, bake for 45 min. Shred it, and leave in the skin. Add spaghetti sauce, 4C breadcrumbs and sprinkle on some fresh parm cheese and broil for about 3 minutes. Viola. WARNING – make sure to keep an eye on the broiler – you only need a couple of minutes! It’s a delicious, easy, and fun meal when you’re trying to eat healthy and don’t have a lot of time. It’s also a great appetizer for your football spread.

3. New SimplyTM Roasted Garlic Sauce from RAGÚ
Look, I get it – we all love to play the Instagram and Pinterest game and make all our own foods from scratch. *Raises hand* But – really, give yourself a break. You don’t ALWAYS have to. Plus there are so many really delicious shelf-stable options out there now to have on-hand for those nights you’re just too tired to cook a big batch of gravy on the stovetop. Ragu has been a family favorite for years, and their new SimplyTM Roasted Garlic Sauce is delicious and easy for a warm bowl of spaghetti and meatballs, “chickn” parm or even the spaghetti squash bowls above. Having staples like these available just makes dinner time easy and tastier than a cardboard microwave meal.

4. Garlic and Ginger from Dorot Gardens
This is for the lazy chef in me. We all hate having to chop chop chop our lives away. But as a single mom, I also find it wasteful to use full-sized ingredients sometimes. I just usually can’t eat/use it all before it goes bad. So, my freezer is my best friend, and Dorot Gardens makes FROZEN, pre-portioned chopped garlic and ginger so you can just pop one into the skillet. It’s a fun kitchen hack that I actually use. PS – they grow all their own garlic and ginger so you don’t have to question it’s origin.

5. Big Lou’s Onion Sauce
This is a fun one to keep on-hand. It’s a perfect yinzer addition because we love sauteed onions in da burgh. This is fun way to spice up ANY of your key players – it’s good on top of burgers and hot dogs (hello! it’s just like grabbing a NYC street dawg at home), makes a good sauce to kick up a grilled cheese a notch, and also it’s tasty to add into the traditional chip chop ham bbq. I suggest just keeping some in the pantry and have on-hand when you’re bored with your current sandwich in front of you.
