Back in the 90s we loved getting weird. We had ouija boards, colored jeans and Doc Martens.
We also had a weirdly dark and grungy love affair, and death was strangely “popular” in song lyrics and movies (Nirvana or Nine Inch Nails, anyone?)
Regardless, we loved it and still laugh about our trend choices today. But – is it making a comeback? Nirvana tees have never gone out of style and I still love to run to a good NIN playlist, and now, you can even catch the weirdest deathly movie now on Broadway – Beetlejuice (don’t say it three times!).
Why you’ll love Beetlejuice
They went all out on this show – and they pulled all the stops (especially in props and set layouts). If you remember the movie, there were lots of Tim Burton classic style creepiness, and they’ve brought all that to the main stage including striped sofas, a massive, deadly snake and lots of green, ghoulish fun.
Plus, listen closely – the lyrics will not disappoint. They’ve been modernized to include some humorous zingers. I won’t spoil it, but I apologize in advance if you’re a hipster vape smoker.
I personally LOVED this show. Maybe it’s my dark soul of a 90s child, but Alex Brightman (Beetlejuice) and Sophia Anne Caruso (Lydia) do an exceptional job of portraying the characters personalities – not to mention Sophia’s booming voice. I have to say Leslie Kritzer has a fantastic solo piece down in hell you won’t want to miss after intermission. And yes, Lydia DOES still marry a creepy demon, but there’s also a fun modern twist on that you’ll find darkly amusing.
About Beetlejuice (if you don’t remember the storyline)
It’s showtime, folks! The ghost-with-the-most makes his Broadway debut in this edgy and irreverent musical comedy based on Tim Burton’s dearly beloved film. BEETLEJUICE tells the story of Lydia Deetz, a strange and unusual teenager whose whole life changes when she meets a recently deceased couple and a demon with a thing for stripes. When Lydia calls on Beetlejuice to scare away anyone with a pulse, this double-crossing specter shows his true stripes, unleashing a (Nether)world of pandemonium, and the biggest sandworm Broadway has ever seen.
