The more you try to carve out time, it seems the less you have to spend. What happened to those days in my twenties when I had nothing to do but lay around all day hungover and watch movies and eat fast food?
According to the NY Post, families get an average of 37 minutes of quality time together a day. That’s it. Okay, so they say it goes up to 2 hours and 40 minutes on weekends. But still – there are 24 hours in a day? What are we doing all those other hours??
Screen time is playing into it, commutes are getting worse, and sadly, we’re just not present when we’re actually together. Toss in work, chores, homework, television, and you wonder why we’re in this position.
So how do we get over that?
I can say find the time all I want, but until you actually put down your phone and stop reading this and do something about it, it won’t change. In fact, if you read back, you’ll see that I write a lot of these posts very early in the am or late at night once he is asleep so I can try and be as present as possible.
And that includes our Friday nights. We have started to cherish them. Weekdays are hard because we have work and homework, but come Friday night, we most likely can actually turn off everything and have some us time. So we’ve made them a habit now. We try to unplug, and do something together, just like I used to back in the day with my dad. You can read the story and get my recipe for Rootbeer Floats here.
