Were you one of those people growing up that looked at your mom’s pot of coffee every morning and said, no way – I’ll never drink that sludge. I still remember her pulling out the tub of Maxwell House instant coffee and stirring and sipping on it throughout the day. (is that really coffee??). And the Mr. Coffee pot. Come on – you remember Mr. Coffee.
It’s safe to say a LOT has changed in coffee since those dark cold winter days with Maxwell, and I am not even sure if my mom would classify what we drink as “coffee,” because the stuff we drink “won’t put hair on your chest.” Yes, this was mother-daughter talk in Western PA.
Now we have progressed into steamed milk, flavors and added caffeine. And truth me told, I am my mother’s daughter. I can’t function in the morning without or until my cup of coffee. However, it’s not black sludge.
While the true New Yorker I am, I do love a crappy cup of coffee (or as Elf would say, the World’s Best Cup of Coffee!) on the go on the city streets, but when that 6:30am alarm goes off for school, I roll out into my kitchen with one-eye and need my fix before school drop-off.
One of my current faves right now is Eight O’Clock Coffee. They have variety of versions that give you either that extra boost of caffeine or you can even go with a decaf cup before bed (or preggo) if you just really love the taste of coffee [insert my mother here]. I mean, let’s be honest, we ALL have those days when we need “ALERT” to make it through.
Plus, I am a fan of their “tips” for the best cup of coffee.
DID YOU KNOW, the best home-brewed coffee is 1-2 rounded tablespoons per 6 ounces. AND – if you grind your beans (yes i do thank you!), the finer you ground them, the STRONGER your coffee will be. For drip coffee makers (like good ol’ Mr. Coffee!) you should use a medium grind. #TheMoreYouKnow
So, in honor of National Coffee Day (September 29) I’ll be raising my mug o’ joe up high in respect to all those moms waking up with one-eye like myself. If you want to virtual cheer me, I’ll be up before Eight O’Clock am, but hey, it’s Eight O’ Clock somewhere!
I was provided with complimentary coffee to facilitate this post, however, all opinions are always my own – if you think I don’t love coffee, ping me!
