We’ve all left a candle burning or a curling iron on when we left the house accidentally at some point. We’re human. But we all know what can happen if unattended items can catch things on fire. During the winter season, especially the holidays, fire calls can rise due to more cooking, paying less attention and things like blankets and space heaters in the home. So, it’s always best to have a plan, especially when you live on top of each other in a city like NYC and the fire might not be your fault but your neighbors.
Did I also mention that last year a plane slid off the runway at LGA and they shut down the subways and roads to pedestrians? NYC may be tough but there’s a reason – we are bound to endure bad weather as some point through out the year.
You may think, that’s why we have Seamless and Fresh Direct! But as a parent, living in big cities means having a plan if big problems arise. AccuWeather reminds us to always #BeReady because bad weather usually catches up with us when we’re not ready for it. They even have a year-round preparedness plan for you to look over here.
And this week, they donated $25,000 to the FDNY Foundation to help keep our NYC kids safe, including really great fire classrooms that you see above (located near Rockefeller Center).
7 FDNY Tips for Winter Fire Safety:
- Make sure kids know to call 9-1-1 in case of emergency, what their address is and a safe place to meet up (just in case you get separated!).
- Check your building fire regulations. If it’s a fireproof building, it can be more dangerous to head out into the hallways than to just say in your apartment and open the windows.
- Check your smoke detectors. Remember, smoke detectors save lives. When’s the last time you checked yours?
- Smoke rises, so stay low to the ground and crawl. Teach kids to stay low and get out of the room if smoke is taking over. Smoke can double in size every 30 seconds and can harm more people than flames.
- It’s a good idea to do a practice escape run so we all know what to do if something happens. It’s hard to stay calm in emergency situations but knowing what to do in advance will help you get out alive.
- Stop Drop and Roll! We’ve learned it as kids, and it still remains the same today. If your clothes catch fire: stop, drop and roll around to put them out.
- Talk to your schools. DYK the FDNY will come to the school and talk for free to students, and invite students into their fire classrooms as well to teach fire safety. You can see a full list of their #FDNYSmart education programs here.
And for fun to have and share, here are some FDNY/AccuWeather post card tips you read, share and reference.
