In preparation for my trip to Pittsburgh next week and attending my annual Steelers game right at home at Heinz Field, I’ve been trying to prep for tailgating by testing out some new recipes and finger foods at home. Listen, we take tailgating serious in Pittsburgh, and you can never just “wing it.” When there are flat screens, hired DJs spinning and real chefs tossing up steaks and burgers on the pavement outside the stadium, potato chips and beer don’t cut it. Thankfully I have a few years of football experience to know just want Yinzers love to eat
Sausage + Mac and Cheese
{See photo above}.We love meat. And we love to grill meat, in fact the colder it is outside, the better. But I say, why not jazz up your favorite chorizo with some fun toppings – like mac and cheese. I once ordered a hot dog this way in NYC, and realized it was brilliant. Who doesn’t love combining meat and cheese, with a twist. Toss these KING’S HAWAIIAN Sweet Hot Dog Buns on the grill a couple minutes before serving for a toasty treat that is sure to warm you up for pregame.
Chicken and Waffles
Everyone loves chicken tenders. So why not take a fun favorite and bring it to the game. You can prep the chicken in advance, and then warm on the grill at the tailgate, and we all know how easy it is to toast some waffles – plus, they make the perfect finger food. Did someone say lego my eggo?
Kentucky Pittsburgh Hot Brown Bake
These sandwiches are not just tasty as hell, they are easy to make.
- 8 slices of bacon
- 4 eggs
- 1 lb turkey
- 1-2 packs of KING’S HAWAIIAN Sweet (or Butter) Rolls)
- 3 Roma Tomatoes
- 8 slices Swiss Cheese
- French fries – for the Pittsburgh twist
Lay one layer of the KING’S HAWAIIAN sweet roll bottoms to line your greased pan (8″ pan is best). Layer with turkey, bacon, fries, cheese and tomatoes. Pour half the eggs over the layer. Repeat turkey, bacon, fries, cheese and tomatoes. Place your KING’S HAWAIIAN sweet roll tops on the top. Pour the remaining eggs over top. Cover with foil and bake at 350 degrees for 20 minutes. Remove the foil and bake another 20-25 minutes. Keep warm to transport, and throw on top of the grill to warm up and melt the cheese before serving at the tailgate.
Don’t forget the Sauce
Yinzers love dippin’ sauces. We literally cannot have a meal without Heinz Ketchup, buffalo sauce or ranch dressing. So, don’t forget to bring some fun sides for dipping. Buffalo sauce = Frank’s Red Hot (a MUST in every Yinzers fridge) and butter. I also mixed some buffalo sauce into BBQ sauce to make a spicy meatball mini crockpot. (These mini crockpots transport well, and all you need is some toothpicks!)
