The first haircut.
It’s hard for me to write about this because I don’t even really know what to say except give you a calendar of events.
It all started about a year ago when Maximo was only 3 months old. Claudio’s culture is the shave the head so the hair grows back quickly.
**You can read my full break down during that experience here**
As you can imagine, I fought shaving off Maximo’s baby hair – and even shed a tear. But, he was starting to lose it and looking more and more like an angry old balding man everyday, so I gave in.
Well, apparently it WORKED – because as you can see, Maximo had (HAD) some fantastic hair. I loved it. I was going for the surfer/mullet-yinzer/hipster/Mason Kardashian look.
I almost got a trim the days before his 1st birthday and chickened out. I also decided then that I was probably NEVER going to cut it – at least for a few years haha.
That was until my grandma kept calling him ‘she’ the entire week we were in Pittsburgh. Claudio insisted that we ‘get a trim.’ So I made the appointment.
Now, you think you know a bad situation when you’re in one – but at the moment – you just are in denial. We were running a few minutes late to our appointment, and I called to tell them the traffic to Brooklyn had us running behind. They sounded fine about it – but now I know – if I’m running late to an appointment – I’ll just reschedule.
I don’t blame Mini Max entirely (Mini Max Cuts and Toys in Brooklyn) – I should’ve taken control of the situation as the mom, but the hairstylist informed us that her lunch was at 1 pm, and her own child was there, waiting to go to lunch. It was 12:55. Since I was so wrapped up in Maximo getting his hair cut, I didn’t think that this would intentionally rush the cut, but looking back , I feel like lunch was more important than Maximo’s new do.
I informed her I was a blogger, so she knew I would be writing about this and taking photos…as I was angling around like paparazzi. I told her ‘just a trim’ I wanted to keep his long hair, and clean up his bangs so they weren’t tickling his face so much. She grabbed a chunk in the back and in my haste, I said – yeah that’s fine.
The entire cut took about 10 minutes. He sat there and watched Elmo as she trimmed him up like a hedge. When he got out of the chair, I was in shock – and I figured it was just because I was so used to seeing him with long hair – that I said it was fine. I mean, you know me – if it was bad, I would’ve said it was bad! But I had already felt rushed to get there, the cut was over in a blink of an eye, and there I was, paying and looking at a child with the bowl cut of Jim Carey in Dumb and Dumber.
Claudio had a breakdown when I sent him pics. That didn’t help. He said to take Maximo back to get it fixed, but do you really want to go back where they just chopped it to begin with? I didn’t want to end up giving him a military buzz!
I went about the day and continued to our afternoon playdate with Brunch with My Baby Moms Christine and Alexis. They kept reassuring me it looked cute – but I couldn’t help but miss and feel MOM GUILT for this awful chop when looking at their children’s cute, long locks.
After a long playdate, and of course stopping by for some NYC pizza (because Brunch with My Baby knows ALL the hot spots to grab a bite! Here we are at Table 87 Coal Oven Pizza on Atlantic Ave in Brooklyn), we headed home, Max took his bath and was off to bed – only to wake up with that big bowl on his head again. haha.
I mean, it is only hair – and it will grow back. But for all you other moms out there – I just say, DON’T RUSH THE APPOINTMENT. If it feels rushed, speak up. Slow down. I will probably go back to Mini Max one day, but it will be more on my terms for the cut – since I know what I want and expect this time.
Maximo still looks cute – it’s just not the haircut of my dreams – and haven’t we all been there. I think I am just disappointed because I had just waited and waited and this was to be a BIG EVENT for us – and it was just whomp whomp. It was rushed, poof it was over and here I was with a bowl cut kid when I wanted a super fun step-by-step process for the first cut.
But – has any mom been happy with their first haircut? Or is this just one of many let downs I have to look forward to in life since I am not a mom and nothing will ever be good enough for my son??
I guess you win some you lose some. Can someone refer me to Mason Kardashian’s hairstyist???
AWWWWW!!!!!!!! We are prejudiced here in the ‘Burgh; Maximo is ALWAYS cute in our book. So he just let her cut away — no fussing?
Yeah he didn’t mind – towards the end he started getting annoyed like – um what are you DOING? get off me! hahaha but lollipops and elmo are quite distracting!
My son had really long curly hair before he had his first haircut. He was two. We went to a local kiddie cut place and they messed up his hair so bad we came home and shaved it! We now go through a period of letting it grow long and curly and the shaving it off completely because we have yet to find a barber who can give him a decent cut.
ugh see that’s what worries me! will i ever find anyone to cut his hair how i like? doesn’t sound promising! boys are tough – they need a good cut – girls can just let it grow!
Boys hair cuts are so difficult! I know this since my kiddos trims are rough on me. I love his long hair and its hard. He is a cutey your little one no matter what his hair
aww thanks 🙂 yeah he’s def still cute – but i won’t deny that I wake up everyday saying – ahhh his hair is just a little bit longer! hahaha
You wouldn’t believe in my story. When Richard was 5 months old I decided to shave his baby’s hair myself. The reason why I made that crazy decision, it’s because: first my mom kept calling me and demand to cut his hair otherwise “they never gonna grow!” and second I wouldn’t trust his hair to anyone back then.
So I put him in a high chair, turned on some cartoons to distract and I started. Omg I did only half of a job when I realized not my baby and not me can take it anymore. After that I didn’t ever touch his hair again. The rest is obvious whenever we went out I had to cover his head with some kind of hat. But once my husband took him to the church without me and there he took Richard’s hat off. So guess what? People started asking what kind of sickness our son has.
So don’t worry Stephanie your son’s first haircut looks just perfect to me))) lol
haha GAH! hair nightmares! we also shaved maximo at 3 months – you can read that story here:https://missstephanieb.nyc/hair-today-gone-tomorrow/
You are so lucky he didn’t cry! Cruz was in tears and hysterics the whole time during his first cut. The car and elmo video were not helping. Then Jorge started taking him to a regular local barber and after that he was fine. He still goes with his dad…it’s their time to bond!
aww that’s cute an i agree i think that’s how it’s going to start going down – dad and son time at the shop. however, i don’t think i want to send him back for like 3 years! lol
