This Halloween, Laffy Taffy is all about getting families together to create costumes together. So I thought this mighe be a fun excuse to get some mom/son bonding time.
I have my moments of creativity (see my chicken costume here), but I think it’s important to know what our strengths are. Some people can’t cook without burning down the kitchen, some people can’t follow a beat in spin class to save their lives, and me, well, the craft gods have never blessed me with the ability to make anything that is worthy of Etsy. But in a seven-year old’s eyes, you are Queen for even trying.
So alas, I am a MOM and I will try. I will also ALWAYS find a way to make anything from food to a scuba outfit black and yellow.
So I thought this super cute and easy idea to make a homemade scuba outfit from Laffy Taffy would make for a fun Halloween costume this year. It’s actually not hard to make – unless you’re me.
Let’s get started.
You only need 4 things:
- 2 empty two-liter bottles
- black electrical tape (trust me – the stronger the better!)
- goggles
- yarn
We even had a ton of fun craft supplies to play with (since I never use them!) so I busted them out to really get the creativity flowing.
How could this possibly go wrong?
It really was a fun crafty morning over here – Max was jamming to Halloween tunes and taping up his bottle like a mummy. First thing that went wrong – glitter glue. It. Never. Dries. Skip. It. Also it “ate” the tissue paper that I thought would make it black an yellow. So instead of bright yellow we got soggy mustard.
ONWARD!
Not to disappoint, we taped, glued and even cemented the armbands on. It wasn’t having it. I think my costume was just following in the footsteps of our football team – falling apart right at game time.
However, Max looks cute and it eventually held together (thanks to physics) long enough for us to play a quick game of Scuba Steve down along the East River. I think after a couple of days drying it’s now stronger than the Patriot’s offensive line, and should easily survive through Halloween trick or treating and overeating of banana Laffy Taffy. Plus, it cute! And #yinzer colored.
So I consider that all a win this year.
