Abrams Books sent me a copy to check out and is partnering with me for a giveaway.
I can still remember the very exact moment I started reading. It was in the kitchen of my step dad’s parents home during a Sunday get together and I was reading (well struggling through) a Sesame Street book. I remember the very last pages as I read them on my own and finished the book for the first time all by myself.
I hugged that book till I feel asleep that night, and I knew from then on, I was destined to be a book lover. My dad used to take me once a week to the library and we would stay there for hours – reading, exploring and bringing home a new bundle for the week. Him Zane Grey’s latest western and me? I wiped out the entire R.L. Stine Fear Street collection by age 15.
One of my favorites to this day was the Anne McCaffrey collection, Dragonsong. As a young girl growing up, I felt very connected to these books, and got lost in the words (I mean worlds) on paper. It was beautiful and I still remember drawing intricate sketches for my book reports.
November’s Book Pick: Rosie Revere and the Raucous Riveters
I still feel that way when a great book series and/or author comes along, and one on my radar currently is Andrea Beaty, author of the Questioneers series. I had seen the books around town popping up, but it wasn’t till I met and listened to Beatty directly at a parenting conference in Brooklyn just a couple weeks ago that I realized her incredible ability to tell stories that can really resonate and build strong character – something all young girls need these days, just as I did.
And what is the first book about? Rosie Revere and the Raucous Riveters – World War II female riveters of course! What a positive way to introduce history into the current day – with the twist of joining into the store yourself to help solve issues that pop up along the way. I mean, what’s more empowering the Rosie the Riveter?
The Questioneers series is a celebration of STEM, perseverance, and passion. Like its characters, Iggy Peck, Rosie Revere, and Ada Twist, every budding architect, engineer, scientist, mathematician, and leader, will become inspired to solve everyday mysteries and come to think more critically about their world. Most importantly, they will learn that despite ithe nevitable difficulty in achieving success, they should always continue to “Read. Question. Think.”—and never give up on their dreams.
