Where I come from – there is only one football. But outside the bubble of black and yellow, an entire world of international futbol exists. And it’s following is massive.
In fact, soccer is really taking over the US this summer – the World Cup just announced it’s coming to North America in 2026, and the International Champions Cup is coming right to NYC and get this – Pittsburgh! In fact, it’s coming to A LOT of cities around the nation – which is HUGE NEWS.
What exactly is the International Champions Cup?
The ICC features the largest number of teams, matches and venues in the Tournament’s history. This year’s chase for the Cup features 18 of the best clubs in the world playing 27 matches across the United States, Europe and Singapore, delivering on the premier sports property’s mission to transform European soccer’s presence around the world.
The Tournament will host U.S.-based matches in New York/New Jersey, Miami, Los Angeles, Washington D.C., Chicago, Charlotte, San Diego, Minneapolis, Pittsburgh, Dallas, and Philadelphia. Also, if you happen to be traveling this summer – Europe host cities include Vienna, Gothenburg, Madrid, Stockholm, Naples, Klagenfurt, Lecce and Warsaw. Singapore will also showcase three matches at the Singapore National Stadium.
Live like a Brit
Needless to say, if you’ve been big into the Royals this year with the wedding and binging on episodes of The Crown on Netflix – now’s your chance to really embrace European culture – their love of soccer. Manchester City V. Liverpool FC (two of the biggest European teams!) will be playing at MetLife Stadium on July 25.
Futbol v. Football
I clearly hail from Pittsburgh, but Maximo’s dad is from Uruguay – one of the top soccer teams in the world (they’re actually in the running for the World Cup again this year!). I’ve learned to love the powder blue tees as much as my black and gold and perfected my DALE! (pronounced dahl- ayyyyy!) and CELESTE URU! chants. It’s for the love of the game. Soccer, aka futbol, has a real capacity for fanatics. So if you’ve always wondered why – now your American love of sports has the opportunity to expand.
